Antioxidants for Dessert

One of the best things about summer is that the sweetest, most succulent fruits and veggies are in season. Berries, in particular, are so much better when you can find them fresh and at the height of their sweetness.

Among the most antioxidant-rich foods are berries, with blueberries at the top of the list. Stone fruits such as plums also rank high for antioxidant power. If you can find fresh, in-season fruits at a farmer’s market, look for them there, but if not, natural foods stores such as Whole Foods are a good source for organic, in-season fruit.

We may all love ice cream, and it’s fine to treat yourself to it every once in a while, if you want to make your dessert count, combine summer’s best fruits together for a refreshing treat.

The recipe below is just a starting point. Feel free to include whatever fruits are in season. It’s quick and satisfying. Have fun with it.

Refreshing Antioxidant Fruit Salad

Cut the mango in half around the stone, and then criss-cross the flesh of the mango halves with a knife into 1/2-inch squares.

Push the diced mango flesh outwards and then slice off the squares from the skin into a bowl.

Tumble in the blueberries, then halve the pomegranate and bash out the seeds with a wooden spoon over the mango. Finally squeeze over the lime juice and serve.
